What over-the-counter medications can I take during pregnancy?

  • Headache

Tylenol (acetaminophen), peppermint tea, rest

  • Heartburn

Tums, Rolaids, Maalox, Mylanta, Zantac, Pepcid, avoid spicy and greasy foods.

  • Constipation

Water, increase fiber, Citrocel, Metamucil, Fibercon, Colace.

  • Nausea

Peppermint, ginger (250 mg capsules 4x day), Emetrol, wristbands, Unisom 12.5 mg, and vitamin B6 up to 4 times a day.

  • Insomnia

Warm milk, Benadryl (25-50 mg) Ambien (needs prescription)

  • Nasal Congestion

If associated with a cold, Sudafed, Sinutabs or Tylenol cold. DO NOT TAKE IF BP increased. If allergy induced, Benadryl or allergy RX. (Football player nose tape works too at night.)

  • Fever


  • Sore Throat

Gargle with warm salt water or Cepacol lozenges

  • Cough

Robitussin DM, non-menthol cough drops

  • Diarrhea¬†

Immodium AD, Kaopectate

  • Hemorrhoids¬†

Tucks medicated pads, Preparation H, Anusol
